Frequently Asked Questions

This page answers questions of version 6 users.

Norton Anti-Virus
We have some reports that Norton Anti-Virus can corrupt Info Select data. If you experience this problem, disable the Script Blocking feature. A corrupted file might be salvageable by doing the above and then trying to load the file again. We encourage you to write to Symantec if you encounter this problem. We would like feedback from users who experience this problem - submit your feedback here. We believe this problem is not encountered by most users.

Why is my menu missing?
Try updating Hhctrl.ocx from the Windows 98 CD.

Why can't I access the help screens?
If you can't access help or get an HHCTRL.OCX error you are missing the newer Microsoft help engine called HTML-help (supported in Windows 98 and up). Please download at http://download.microsoft.com/download/msdnlib/Install/1.32/W9X2KMeXP/EN-US/hhupd.exe .

Why can't I find a command on the menus?
Try changing your selection in Help | Levels.

Why do I get a message about "missing export comctl32.dll"?
Click here to allow for the new toolbar style; then in Info Select choose Tools | Options | View and in the Bars group enable all the checkboxes.

Why can't I see the toolbar buttons?
See the above answer.

Can I run two different versions of Info Select at the same time?
This can create complications. We don't recommend it.

How do I print the documentation?
Choose Help | Contents. Select the topic you want to print or the root topic at the top of the left pane to print everything. Click the Print button.

When I close the application, I cannot open it again without getting an error.
Uncheck Tools | Options | View | Place application icon in system tray while running. When this option is checked closing the app only minimizes the app to the tray.

Why does the Transporter work differently from prior versions?
Version 6 transfers text in Rich Text Format, while version 5 used plain text. To obtain the same results as in Info Select 5, use CTRL-C to copy selected text and then go to Info Select and choose Edit | Paste Special | Plain text.

Info Select for Palm difficulty after installing version 6.
Please download and reinstall the current Info Select for Palm. Then carefully follow the instructions in the Palm help "Synchronization" section.

How can I paste images without using OLE?
Version 6 handles images in BMP and JPEG format. Other formats are stored as shortcuts or OLE objects. To insert an image into a Note without OLE, put a BMP or JPEG image on the clipboard and paste the clipboard into the Note. Or choose File | Import to import an image from your hard disk and then copy the imported image into the Note.

Can I use Info Select for AOL email?
AOL uses a proprietary email method that is not compatible with most email software, including Info Select. To use Info Select email we recommend that you get a real email account (one that supports the standard POP3 method) and continue to use AOL for its many non-email functions. Free e-mail accounts are available from http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/E-mail/Free/POP3. You can enable automatic forwarding from your AOL account to your real email account.

Why did new text change to red?
Uncheck Format | Track Changes | Highlight.

Did the Reports feature change?
Yes, several changes were made to the Reports feature to make it easier to use. Please see Help | Contents | Reports for details.

How can I print scanned images?
Select the image. Choose Edit | Copy. Choose Insert | Note. Click inside the Note in the workspace. Choose Edit | Paste. Choose File | Print.

To resolve any problems with ctl3d32.dll: 1) Close open programs. 2) Download this file for Win 95 or this file for Win 98 to c:\temp.  3) Double click on the downloaded exe file - the new file will be unzipped to the proper place.

If you are running Windows 2000, try deleting c:\program files\info select\stats.txt
